The Choir Director Podcast
A New Voice in the Choral Conversation
There is something valuable about hearing how other conductors think and I am so delighted to have discovered The Choir Director Podcast. You should too!
That is why it is always encouraging to see new platforms emerging that give space to those conversations and this is finally a British one which promises to be fabulous based on the episodes so far!
Hosted by Russell Scott, the podcast brings together practical ideas, musical insight, and real-world experience for those working with choirs.
It focuses on the craft of building ensembles, leading rehearsals, and creating meaningful musical experiences—areas that sit at the heart of what many of us do week after week.
What is particularly valuable is the emphasis on practicality.
These are not abstract discussions.
They are ideas that can be taken into rehearsal immediately—whether that is refining technique, shaping sound, or thinking differently about how we lead.
There is also something important in the range of voices; not just the very well known, but those doing brilliant work in the provinces - this is something quite fresh and very exciting. Indeed, this is the sort of less ordinary this writer loves!
Through conversations with conductors, educators, and practitioners, the podcast reflects the diversity of approaches within choral work.
There is no single way of doing this.
But there is always something to learn.
In a profession that can often feel quite isolated, these kinds of shared conversations matter.
They create connection.
They prompt reflection.
They challenge assumptions.
For anyone working with choirs, it is worth taking the time to listen.
Not to find “answers”, but to encounter ideas.
Because the way we think about our work shapes the way we do it.
And the more we engage with different perspectives, the richer that work becomes.
