Hello, I’m Peter Futcher
I am a choral conductor, singer, and composer, recognised for an imaginative and collaborative approach to choral music.
My musical background began as a church chorister and organist, and I later held choral scholarships at Royal Holloway, University of London and at St Martin-in-the-Fields, Trafalgar Square. I went on to spend sixteen years as a Tenor Lay Clerk at Canterbury Cathedral, singing daily services and performing extensively on tour in the UK and internationally. Alongside this, I have worked as a professional singer, conductor, and accompanist across a wide range of choral settings.
At the heart of my work is a belief that the connection between conductor and singer is central to musical success. Through clear, intentional gesture and a collaborative rehearsal process, I aim to help ensembles develop a shared sense of communication, responsiveness, and musical understanding. I place particular importance on the atmosphere within the rehearsal room—how it is created, sustained, and shared—as a vital factor in shaping both the rehearsal process and the resulting performance.
My rehearsals are characterised by high energy and focus, combining clarity of thought with detailed attention to text, sound, and ensemble awareness. I encourage singers to think, listen, and respond, creating an environment in which music is shaped collectively rather than imposed. Interpretation is never about imitation, but about creating something distinctive—seeking, wherever possible, to be less ordinary.
I work with choirs of all sizes, from chamber ensembles to larger groups, often exploring repertoire that invites singers to engage more deeply with both sound and meaning. I am equally at home directing, accompanying from the piano or organ, or developing projects that bring people together through singing.
Alongside my conducting, I work with teachers and conductors to develop their own practice, focusing particularly on the relationship between gesture and sound, rehearsal culture, and the wider role of the choral director.
I am Head of Music and a pastoral leader in a Kent school, combining my work in education with a broad portfolio career as a conductor and musician. I continue to direct choirs across the South East, working with ensembles known for their expressive performances and strong sense of community.
My compositions and arrangements are published by the Royal School of Church Music (RSCM), Shorter House, and Hal Leonard (USA). My work reflects a simple belief: that choral music should move both singer and listener—music that is thoughtful, communicative, and crafted with the intention of making people feel something.
