Welcome to Choir Matters
Welcome to Choir Matters.
Because choir matters. And the way we rehearse, lead, and shape sound together matters just as much.
This is a space for sharing ideas, reflections, and practical insights into choral rehearsal and performance—drawn from my work as a conductor, teacher, and musician.
I’m Peter Futcher, a choral conductor and music educator working with choirs, conductors, and singers to develop confident, expressive performance.
At the centre of my work is a simple belief: that the relationship between conductor and singer is where everything begins.
Gesture shapes sound.
Energy shapes response.
And what happens in rehearsal determines what is possible in performance.
Choir Matters is where we shall explore these ideas.
Sometimes that might be a practical rehearsal approach.
Sometimes a reflection on gesture or communication.
Sometimes a challenge to the way we think about interpretation and performance.
I’m particularly interested in the idea that interpretation should never be the copying of another performance. Our role is not to reproduce—but to create something distinctive, meaningful, and alive in the moment.
You can expect:
Short reflections on rehearsal and performance
Ideas around gesture, energy, and ensemble response
Practical approaches you can take straight into rehearsal
Occasional provocations—things to question, rethink, or try differently
This isn’t about having all the answers.
It’s about thinking more deeply about what we do, and why we do it—and, ultimately, about helping choirs to sing with greater confidence, connection, and musical understanding.
If this resonates, feel free to share it with colleagues or others working with choirs. And if something sparks a thought or question, I’d love to hear from you.
